오랫동안 브리타 정수기를 사용하다가, 이번에 싱크대 아래에 설치하는 정수기를 사용해보기로 했다.
Since moving to America, I have been using a Brita water filter.
However, It was getting annyoing to replace the filter regulary and I didn't want that ugly plastic container to take up space on my kitchen countertop anymore. That's why I decided to get a water filter under the sink so I can get water directly from the faucet.
역삼투압방식의 정수기는 너무 비싼데다가, 필터도 자주 교체해야하고, 공간을 많이 차지해서, 우리의 부엌 싱크대 아래에 설치할 수가 없었다. 그래서 찾아본 결과, 필터 한개를 싱크대의 메인 수도꼭지에 바로 연결해서 사용할 수 있는 필터가 있었다. 가격도 훨씬 저렴했는데 필터 교체 주기도 상대적으로 길었다.
아무래도 걸러주는게 역삼투압보다는 덜 하다보니 필터도 자주 교체할 필요가 없는게 아닌가 싶다.
I considered the RO(Reverse Osmosis) system, but it's too pricey, you have to replace the filter regulary just like the Brita, and it's too bulky to have under our sink. So, I found under-sink water filters, which you only need one filter and connect directly to the main faucet instead of having a dedicated one. They are cheaper and the filter's lifespan is longer than the RO system, which I think is becasue they filter less than the RO system.
어쨌든, 여러 브랜드 및 제품이 있었는데 처음에는 ICE PURE라는 곳에서 구입하려고, 이메일로 상품에 대한 문의를 했더니 답이 없었다. 이런 현상은, 나중에 제품에 문제가 생겼을 때 고객센터와 연락을 못하게 되는 아주 답답한 상황에 닥칠 것 같아 마음을 바꿨다. Waterdrop도 꽤 유명하길래 고려를 해봤다. 근데 아래에 2인치 공간을 두고 캐비넷에 드릴을 박아 설치를 해야하는데 내가 원하는 크기의 필터는 길이가 너무 길어 우리 싱크대 캐비넷에 부적합했다.
Anyway, I decided to go for the one filter system, becasue less filtering was not my concern, as long as it filters something and makes the water cleaner than regular tap water.
There were 3 different brands that I was considering. ICE PURE was the first one that I found. I didn't end up choosing this one becasue they never reponsed me when I emailed them about the filter. Not being able to contact the company easily is never good when you have an issue with their product in the future. So I started to look for another brand and found Waterdrop. They were pretty popular and had a lot of good reviews. However, an installation issue stopped me from going with them. You have to hang the filter inside the cabinet by screwing them 2 inches above the bottom of the cabinet. But the filter I wanted to get was too long to install.
그러다가 마지막으로 찾아낸 것이 바로, CuZn 제품이었다.
다른 제품들에 비해 필터 한개짜리 치고 쬐끔 비싸긴 하나, 필터 수명이 최대 5년이다. 잘만 쓰면 5년 동안 교체없이 사용해도 된다는 말이니 얼마나 편하고 좋은가.
CuZn was the last one I found. They are a little more expensive than the others, but the filter lifespan is maximum 5 years. How incredible it is that you don't have to replace the filter for 5 years as long as you don't have any issues within that period.
그래서 바로 구입 결정!
참고로 공식 웹사이트도 있고, 아마존에서도 판매하고 있다. 아마존 사용이 더 편리했던 나는 아마존에서 구입을 했다.

패키지에는 필터 1개, 호스 1개, 설명서가 있다.
The filter comes with a new hose, and instructions.
본격적으로 필터를 설치하기 전에 가장 먼저 해야할 것은, 싱크대 찬물 수도관의 물을 끄는 것이다. 뜨거운 물은 건드릴 필요 없다. 찬물만 완전히 끄면 된다.
The first thing you have to do before installing it is shut off the cold water supply under the sink. You don't have to touch the hot water line at all.
밸브를 완전히 잠그고 나서는, 수도꼭지를 틀어서 남아있던 물도 완전히 빼준다.
After shutting off the valve, drain the rest of the water by turning on the faucet.
찬물 수도관을 밸브로부터 분리시켜야 하는데, 그전에 호스 안에 남아있던 물이 흘러내릴 수도 있으니 수건을 깔아서 캐비넷이 젖는 걸 방지해주면 좋다.
You have to disconnect the water supply from the shut-off valve. It's good to have a towel under the valve before doing so just in case water drips.
렌치를 이용해서 피팅을 돌려 풀어주면 된다.
Disconnect the hose by unscrewing the fitting with a wrench.
이제 필터 본체에다가 호스를 연결해야하는데, 본체를 보면 두개의 피팅이 있다.
둘 중에 무엇을 먼저 시작하느냐는 아무런 상관이 없다.
다만 나는 편하게 하고자, 싱크대 밖에서 할 수 있는 걸 먼저 하기로 했다.
There are 2 fittings on the filter that you have to conncect to 2 hoses.
It doesn't matter which you connect first but I started with the inlet fitting so I could comfortably work outside of the cabinet.
패키지에 달려온 새로운 호스를 필터 본체의 Inlet에 연결시켜준다.
You should connect the new hose that came with the filter to the inlet fitting.
손가락 힘을 이용해서 먼저 돌려주다가 더이상 돌아가지 않으면 그때 렌치를 이용해 조금 더 돌려주면 된다. 상세한 건 설명서에 잘 나와있다.
You hand-tighten the connection first, and then use a wrench to further tighten it. Please read the instructions for details.
그 다음은 필터 본체의 위쪽에 위치한 Outlet에 앞서 밸브로부터 분리시킨 수도꼭지 수도관을 연결시켜준다. 그래야 필터를 거쳐 수도꼭지를 통해 물이 나올테니 말이다.
Next, move the filter inside the cabinet and connect the existing faucet hose to the outlet fitting which is located on the top of the filter.
이제는 나머지끼리 연결해주면 된다. 즉, 필터 본체의 Inlet에 연결되어있는 호스를 찬물 수도관 밸브에다가 연결시켜주는 것이다.
Now, you can connect the rest of them. That is, the other side of the hose which is connected to the inlet fitting should be connected to the shut-off valve fitting.
마지막으로 수도관 밸브를 다시 열어만 주면 되는데, 한번에 확 돌리지 말고 천천히 돌리면서 물이 새는 곳이 있나 확인을 해야한다.
After everything is connected, you can turn the water valve back on, but slowy.
밸브 쪽, 필터의 피팅 두군데를 만져가며 젖는 부분이 있는지 끊임없이 확인해주는 것이 좋다.
Check for any leakage from the 3 connections : shut-off valve fitting, inlet fitting, outlet fitting
어쨌든, 필터를 다 연결하고 나서 수돗물을 틀어보면 처음에 까만 물이 나오기 시작한다. 이거는 필터 안에 들어있는 몸에 무해한 활성탄이라는 검은 물질 때문인데, 물이 흐르면서 다 빠져나가게 되어있다. 즉 처음 필터를 설치하고나서는 물 색깔이 깨끗하게 돌아올 때까지 계속 물을 틀어놔야한다. 나의 경우에 그리 오래 걸리진 않았다. 10분도 채 걸리지 않았던 걸로 기억한다.
Finally, you can turn the water on from the faucet. You might see dark water comming out which is from the activated carbon that the filter contains, but this is normal. You have to keep the water running until it turns clear. It took less than 5 minutes in my case.
활성탄을 다 빼고나면 바로 물을 마실 수 있는데, 처음 며칠은 물을 따라보면 작은 공기방울들이 가득 차면서 흐릿해지는 걸 볼 수 있다.
You can drink the water right after flushing out the dark water. However, you will see the water comes out a little cloudy for the first few days becasue of the micro bubbles.
이는 몇초만 기다려보면, 바로 공기 중에 날아가면서 없어지는 걸 확인할 수 있다.
이런 현상도 며칠 후면 완전히 없어진다.
The micro bubbles start to disappear within a few seconds and makes a sound like carbonated soda.
참고로 위 필터는 따로 식수용 수도꼭지를 설치해서 사용하는 것이 아니라 메인 수도꼭지를 이용하는 것이기 때문에 식수로 사용할 물을 따를 때는 핸들을 차가운 쪽으로 돌려야한다. 이마저도 귀찮다면 어쩔 수 없지만?? 나는 오히려 따로 수도꼭지를 설치하지 않아도 되어서 너무 좋았다. 카운터탑을 설치하기 전에 언더 싱크 정수기를 설치할 줄 알았다면 미리 구멍을 만들었겠지만, 이제와서 다시 일을 벌이기는 싫다...^^;;;
By the way, when you want to get the drinkable water, the faucet handle should be on the cold side since the filter is connected to that water supply line only.
I love that I don't need a seperate faucet for the filtered water. I could've made a hole for the faucet before installing the butcherblock countertop if I knew that I would install an under-sink water filter. I could still do that, but I'm too lazy now...
어쨌든, 개인적으로 물맛도 괜찮다.
설치도 간편하고, 물도 간편하게 따라 마실 수 있는 언더싱크 정수기 완전 추천한다.
Anyway, personally the water tastes good too.
I would definitely recommend this under-sink water filter.
