지난 일요일(1/08/23), 부엌 나무 상판에다가 super penetrating oil을 바르고(https://akoreaninamerica.tistory.com/2), 이틀 후인 수요일(1/11/23)에 universal oil을 발라줬다.
I applied super penetrating oil on my butcherblock countertops last Sunday(1/08/23)(https://akoreaninamerica.tistory.com/2), and after two days, I applied Odie's universal oil.
이 조그만 것이 얼마나 비싼지 모른다.
나는 아마존에서 starter kit로 구입을 했는데, $59.25를 지불했다. starter kit에는 odie's universal oil과 나무 스틱, 어플리케이터 패드, 코튼 타올이 달려온다.
I was kind of surprised by how expensive this small jar of oil was.
I purchased it with the starter kit on Amazon for $59.25. The starter kit includes Odie's universal oil, wooden sticks, aplicator pads and cotton towels.
universal oil도 super penetrating oil과 마찬가지로 잘 섞어주는게 중요한데, 얘는 확실히 점도가 되기 때문에 병을 흔들어 섞는건 아에 불가능하다. 그래서 나무스틱을 활용해 제대로 섞어줘야한다.
You have to stir the universal oil very well as you do the super penetrating oil. But the universal oil is much thicker than the super penetrating, so you better use a wooden stick to stir it instead of just shaking the jar.
super penetrating도 적당하게 발라주라고 해서 되게 조심했었는데, universal oil도 아주 얇~~게 바르라고 해서 패드에만 오일을 묻혀가며 발랐다. 근데 얘는 super penetrating과 다르게 패드에 바르고 오래두면 안되고 바로 사용해야한다. 꽤 빠른 시간 내에 굳어서 젤리같은 입자가 생기기 때문이다.
Also, just like the super penetrating oil, you shouldn't use too much. Therefore, I put a small amount on the applicator pad directly and then applied a very thin coat. By the way, you can't let the pad sit with oil on it for too long without using it, because the universal oil kind of hardens to a jelly-like substance quickly.
나무 상판에 바를 때도 느낌이 확실히 다르다. super penetrating은 패드를 이용해 바를 때, 큰 힘을 들이지 않아도 부드럽게 잘 발렸는데, universal은 좀 뻑뻑해서 힘을 좀 줘야 했다.
Applying the universal oil was less smooth than the super penetrating, so I had to apply more pressure when wiping the countertop.
모든 작업이 super penetrating과 똑같다. 오일을 바르고 1시간 정도 두었다가 타올로 부드러운 느낌이 날때까지 닦아내면 끝.
참고로 코트 사이에 샌딩을 할 필요는 없었다. 유투브에서 어떤 분이 super penetrating을 바르고나서 좀 거친 느낌이 나서 살짝 샌딩했다고 하던데, 우리 상판은 너무? 부드럽기만 해서 샌딩할 필요도 없었고, 오디스 오일에서도 중간에 샌딩할 필요 없다고 했었다. 물론 본인이 하고 싶으면 살짝 샌딩해도 된단다.
The whole process is exactly the same as the super penetrating. You apply the oil, leave it for about an hour, and then wipe the excess.
By the way, I didn't sand the countertops between coats. I saw one person from Youtube who sanded the butcherblock countertop after applying the super penetrating saying because the oil made the countertop surface kind of rough. But our countertops were pretty soft and smooth and even Odie's oil said you don't need to sand in between coats. However, you can still sand if you'd like to do.
탑 부분이 아주아주 만족스럽다.
물론 사진이 잘 나온 것도 있지만 실제도 이렇다^^
I'm really satisfied with how it came out.
오디스 오일로 작업 중 정말 큰 고비가 없었는데, 딱 한가지 불안한 점이 두가지가 있다.
첫번째는, end grain의 표면이 상판 위의 표면과 느낌이 다르다는 것이다.
I didn't really have any big issues using Odie's oil, but there were 2 things that I'm a little concerned about.
The first thing is the end grain feels a little different than the top of the butcherblock countertops.
왼쪽의 테두리 부분은 문제가 없는데, 오른쪽의 end grain이 문제이다. 나무 상판을 자를 때 드러나는 표면 말이다.
super penetrating을 바르고 나서 상판 위랑, 자르지 않은 테두리 부분은 진짜 부드럽고 뽀송뽀송한 느낌이 났는데, 잘려진 부분의 end grain은 아무리 닦고 닦아도 시간이 지나면, 뭔가 오일이 묻어있는 느낌이 났다. 근데 그런 느낌이 나도 막상 손가락으로 닦아보면 오일이 실제로 묻어나오진 않았다. 그래도 뽀송한 느낌은 확실히 아니었다.
The edge shown on the left picture has no problem but the picture on the right with the exposed end grain from cutting the butcherblock is a little different.
After I applied the super penetrating oil, the top of the countertop and the edge(no cut) was so soft and dry but the end grain(cut) felt kind of slick and less dry. However, when I tried wiping the end grain with my finger, no excess oil came off.
그래서 universal oil을 바르기 전에 Odie's oil에 전화를 하여 전문가와 통화를 했다. 그 분의 말에 따르면 end grain의 경우 샌딩할 때 부드럽게 잘 샌딩을 해야하고, 원래 오일을 많이 먹는 부분이라 상판의 표면보다 더 많이, 거칠게 닦아내야 한다고 한다. 어쨌든 지금 내가 닥친 상황을 해결하기 위해서는, universal oil을 바를 때, 다른 부분과 달리 end grain은 작은 범위로 나누어 1시간을 기다릴 필요 없이 바로 닦아내라고 했다. 그리고 다른 표면을 닦아내야 할 때 end grain을 다시 한번 닦아내는 것도 좋다고 했다. 결론적으로 end grain은 힘을 들여 많이 많이 닦아내야 한다는 것.
I was too worried to apply the universal oil at that moment so I had to call Odie's oil and ask. According to the wood expert from Odie's oil, you have to sand the end grain so it's really smooth, and buff off the excess oil with more force since the end grain absorbs a lot of oil. To solve the problem, he told us to apply the universal oil on the end grain in little sections, and buff it right way instead of letting it sit for an hour.
두번째는, 이후에 처리해야하는 caulking 작업이다.
중요한 부분들은 오일을 바르기 전에 미리 caulking 처리를 했지만, 깜빡하고 처리 못한 부분이 있다.
The second thing is the caulking process.
I already finished caulking pretty much where I have to, but I forgot 2 spots.
바로 수도꼭지가 들어가는 자리와 냉장고 패널과 나무 상판이 만나는 부분이다.
수도꼭지 설치 후에 수도꼭지 바닥 부분과 나무 상판이 만나는 부분을 caulking해야 하는데, 수도꼭지를 미리 설치하지 못해서 어쩔 수 없었고, 냉장고 패널과 나무 상판이 만나는 부분은 그냥 깜빡한 것이었다;;;
왠만한 caulk 종류들이 오일을 바른 표면에 잘 붙지 않기 때문에 굉장히 걱정스럽다.
그래서 오디스 오일 회사에 전화했을 때 이 부분에 대해서도 물어봤는데, 두가지 방법을 알려줬다.
It's where the faucet meets the countertop, and where the fridge panel meets the countertop.
I have to caulk around the faucet later since I couldn't install the kitchen faucet before applying the oil, and I just forgot to caulk between the fridge panel and the countertop.
I'm just worried that most caulking sealents doesn't stick to oiled surfaces.
So, I asked to the Odie's oil wood expert about this too and he gave me two options.
첫번째는 caulking 할 부분을 제외하고 테이프로 마스킹을 한 후, caulking을 할 부분을 살짝 샌딩하는 방법인데, 내 생각에 이미 오일이 나무 깊숙이 스며들었기 때문에 겉만 샌딩한다고 해서 해결이 될지 의문이 간다.
두번째는 마찬가지로 테이프 마스킹을 한 후, caulking을 할 부분에 dewaxed shellac을 바르고 그 위에다 caulking을 하는 방법이다. 이게 그나마 효과가 있어보이는데, 이거는 좀 조심해야할 것 같다. 이미 오일을 바른 표면에 shellac을 바르려면 오일이 확실히 마른 후에 해야한다고 들었기 때문이다. 그럴려면... 도대체 얼마나 더 기다려야할 지도 모르겠고 말이다.
The first option I can do is to mask off where I have to caulk with tape, and scuff off the surface, but I feel like it might not work since the oil is already penetrated inside of the wood.
The second option is to mask off the same way, apply a dewaxed shellac, and then caulk. This way seems like a better option, but I have to be careful because I heard you can apply shellac over oiled surfaces only when the oil is dried or cured completely. But in that case I don't know how much longer I have to wait ...
어쨌든 이거는 어떻게 할지 나중에 다시 생각해 볼 참이다.
Anyway I will think about these things later.
이게 최종 결과물들인데, 위의 두가지 불안 요소만 제외하면 정말 마음에 든다.
그리고 생각보다 오일이 너무 많이 남아서 좀 놀랍기도 하다. 시간이 지나고 한번씩 발라주기도 해야겠지만, 나중에 식탁이랑 침대 프레임을 만들 때도 써야겠다.
I really love what I did except for the two things that I have to worry about.
I'm also impressed how much oil is still left. I am going to apply the oil for my countertops as time goes by, but also planning to use them when I build a dining table and bed frame too.
