마치 새로 이사 온 집의 저주가 시작된 것 같다.
절대 비싼 돈 들여 고치지 않으려고 이 집을 선택했는데, 창문과 문도 다 바꿔놨더니 이제는 보일러가 말썽이다.
It feels like our new house cursed us.
We bought our house because it didn't look like there were so many major things we had to fix, but we've already gotten our windows and doors replaced and now our old boiler broke down.
이 추운 겨울에 보일러가 고장나니 말도 안나온다. 물론, 겨울이 되어야 보일러를 작동시키니 이 시기에 고장이 많이 나겠지만...?
I can't believe that our boiler stopped working in this cold weather.
지난 목요일에, 로드아일랜드 에너지회사에서 가스미터 공사를 한다고 와서는 보일러를 잠깐 껐다가 일을 끝마치고 다시 켰는데, 다음날 아침 보일러가 거대한 스팀을 뿜어내며 실린더의 물을 다 빼버렸다.
단순히 물이 그냥 빠진거지 하고 물을 채웠다가 작동시켰더니 작동이 되었다.
근데 혹시 몰라 전날 우리집에 왔던 에너지 회사 공사팀에 연락하여 방문을 부탁했다.
In the past few months, Rhode Island Energy has been working on new gas meter construction on our street. They come into every house and reconnected gas pipes to outside of the house. They came to our house last Thursday. To start to work, they had to turn off our boiler and then turn it back on when they left and the next morning this giant and loud steam came out of our boiler and drained all the water in the glass cylinder.
We just thought it simply drained the water, so we just refilled water into the boiler and it worked again.
However, we called Rhode Island Energy and they sent someone to our house to check on the boiler.
직원이 우리 보일러를 이리저리 살펴보더니 작동시키면 위험하다며 갑자기 보일러 가스 라인을 끊어버리더니 캡으로 덮고서 플러머를 부르란다........?
When the guy came to our house we explained what happended. He looked around the boiler, and told us what happened that morning is not related to their work. He said it's too dangerous to use the boiler and then diconnected our gas line and capped it so we couldn't use it. He told us to call a plumber and left just like that......
아니 날씨도 추운데다가, 금요일에 그것도 3시가 다되어서 와놓고는 플러머들 스케줄 잡기도 어려운데 어쩌라는 건지 난감했다. 물론 안전을 위해 그들이 그렇게 했겠건만 너무나 어이가 없었다.
But, it was almost 4 p.m at that time and it was hard to reach out to any plumbers on a Friday.
그렇게 남편과 여러군데 플러머를 전화해봤지만, 역시나 당일 방문이 가능한 회사를 찾기가 어려웠다.
거의 다음주가 되어야 올 수 있다고 했는데, 딱! 한군데에서 당일 방문이 된다고 하여 급히 모셨다(?)
We called as many plumbers as possible and only one could come to check our boiler that day.
우리 보일러를 이리저리 살펴보더니, 고치는 건 하지 않겠단다(?).... 보일러가 너무 오래되서 고쳐놔도 임시방편일 뿐일 거라는 판단에 아에 건드리고 싶지 않다는 말이겠지. 하여튼 보일러 자체를 교체해야한단다.
When he came to our house, we asked him if he can fix it hoping we didn't have to replace the whole boiler. He examined it and said he wouldn't do anything to fix. The boiler is pretty old and he said it wouldn't be worth it to fix. Therefore, we only had one option. REPLACEMENT...
그래서 일단 마음을 진정시키기 위한 시간을 갖기 위해 그 분을 돌려보냈다.
We kind of knew that we had to replace our boiler at some point within 2 years but didn't expect that it would happen so soon.
쬐끔 덜 추웠던 금요일과 주말을 그렇게 난방이 꺼진채로 보내고, 월요일에 다른 플러머 회사에 전화를 하여 quote를 받았다. 그분말로는 지금 우리 보일러가 가스 콤비 스팀 보일러(하나의 스팀 보일러로 온수도 얻고 집안 난방도 해결하는 것)인데, 이런 시스템은 에너지 효율성이 떨어지므로 온수와 난방을 분리시키란다. 아직 정확히는 잘 모르겠지만, 같은 가스를 이용해 난방을 위한 스팀 보일러를 굴리고(?) 온수를 위한 물 탱크도 굴리는 그런 방식인 것 같다.
Anyway, we had to survive without a boiler over the weekend, and called another plumber to get a quote for a reaplacement last monday. He said our gas steam combi boiler is not effeicient, so he recommended a seperate water heater and space heating system.
하여튼 그렇게 교체를 하면, $9,900이 든단다. 하하..........
메사추세츠에서 일하는 남편의 hvac 친구 말에 의하면 좀 싼 것 같아서 뭔가 의심스럽다고 하는데(내가 생각하기엔 저 돈도 비싼데..), 아무래도 메사추세츠와 로드아일랜드의 시세 차이인 것 같다.
The important thing is it would cost us $9,900 to replace our boiler.
According to my husband's HVAC friend who is working in MA, it's kind of suspicious because it's much cheaper than he thought, but I think it's just the price difference between MA and RI.
뭐 어쨌든, 돈이 얼마가 들던 우리는 선택지가 없다. 그래서 일단 그들에게(?) 보일러 교체를 맡기기로 했는데 금요일에 교체가 가능하단다. 하하하하하.......
금요일까지 남편과 나는 이 추위 속에서 버텨야 한다.
지금 이불을 총 세개나 꺼내들어 사용하고 있고, 전기 히터에다가 엄마가 준 라파까지 총 동원하여 우리의 몸을 따뜻하게 유지시키고 있다.
But it doesn't really matter how much it costs to replace the boiler because we didn't really have a choice at that point. So we told the plumber that we wanted to replace the boiler at that price and he told us he could come to replace it that Friday.
That means we have to survive in this cold house almost a week without heating....
We have been using a space heater and 3 blankets for bed, and a heating massager to keep our bodies warm as much as possible.
진짜 이 집은.. 우리가 돈을 들인만큼 어떻게든 오래 버티고 버텨 살아보고야 말 것이다.
I will definitely make sure that we will live in this house as long as possible since we've been pouring ton's of money into it....
